BACKGROUND

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is undertaking an inquiry into whether or not the state of the Vaal River violates or threatens human rights including environmental rights in terms of section 24 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.  

OUTA made its submission on 30 November 2018.  The submission pertained to the Sedibeng Regional Sanitation Scheme (SRSS) and highlighted issues which may have contributed towards the project’s implementation and thus contributed towards pollution in the Vaal River.

WHY IS OUTA CHALLENGING 

OUTA seeks to aid the SAHRC in its investigation by submitting relevant information that speaks to the pollution in the Vaal River

WHAT IS OUTA DOING ABOUT IT

Pursuant to the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference, OUTA made a submission as civil society.  

OUTA is awaiting the SAHRC’s report on the Inquiry and will consider available avenues.
