PRASA Board Charges

26th October 2017

OUTA lays corruption charges against the PRASA board.

WHAT IS OUTA DOING?
OUTA has filed charges of corruption and fraud against the former PRASA board which oversaw the March 2013 contract with Swifambo to provide 70 locomotives.
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
The PRASA board was responsible for this deal, which has been called corrupt by the Johannesburg High Court and overturned. PRASA hired Swifambo to provide the trains, but Swifambo was a front for a Spanish company that was the 100% subcontractor. The trains provided can’t be used on South African railways as they’re the wrong specification. Corruption-fighter Popo Molefe successfully challenged the deal in court when he was PRASA chairman; his term of office wasn’t renewed.
