AARTO FIX ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH
Road safety needs urgent help, but the proposed AARTO Amendment Bill is not the answer, says OUTA.
AARTO AMENDMENT BILL IS NOT THE ANSWER TO ROAD SAFETY
While OUTA is serious about improving road safety and reducing fatalities, we fear that the AARTO Bill will not achieve this. AARTO was rolled out in Gauteng ten years ago and failed spectacularly. Statistics don’t support the claim that it will lead to a reduction in fatalities on roads.

WHAT IS AARTO
The Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences or AARTO, is a set of laws and regulations tabled by Road Traffic Infringement Agency aimed at improving road safety by implementing stringent protocols which stand to hold motorists accountable for traffic violations.
The AARTO Amendment Bill, which was tabled in 2015, was passed by a majority by the National Assembly on 5 September 2017. The Bill was signed by the President on 13 August and will begin being implemented once the law has been gazetted with a commencement date.
